AI-Ethics is so Challenging — Murat Durmus

As an AI ethicist, one must profoundly understand multiple domains; This entails familiarity with the technology itself, the underlying philosophical foundations, the ethical and moral dimensions, and the psychological and sociological implications for individuals, the environment, and society at large. Additionally, one must grapple with the intricate legal and privacy challenges that emerge in this context. Lastly, methodological expertise and conceptual understanding are indispensable for translating these considerations into a practical framework.

Many advocates for transparent, fair, and ‘ethical’ AI acknowledge that these concerns have been overlooked or marginalized across various technological, business, and research domains. As a result, numerous AI ethicists are driven by a desire to establish robust ethical foundations right from the outset, especially in AI, given its pervasive influence on every facet of our future lives.

AI ethics is a dynamic and profoundly interdisciplinary field. For me, it is one of the most crucial, exciting, and promising domains for future engagement.

I firmly stand by my statement I have made several years ago:

“Graduates of philosophy and human sciences will be in high demand in the future to investigate AI-related processes through a human lens.”

Thanks for reading.

Murat
