The 10 Commandments of AI Ethics

*The Ten Commandments of AI Ethics are not intended to pay homage to a particular religious movement or to exalt other perspectives. It is more of an attempt to generate new perspectives to discuss the topic more broadly. Please don’t take it too seriously.

The Ten Commandments of AI Ethics represent our technological advancement and moral vision in the digital world we have created. These commandments are not just about coding but also about understanding the human condition. They reflect on ourselves as we give life to machines made of silicon and circuits.

Our journey towards creating intelligent machines is also about refining our ethics and intelligence. By teaching AI how to ‘be’, we may be learning anew what it means to be human.

  1. Thou Shalt Not Misrepresent Reality: Like a truthful Socrates in a digital agora, AI shall not distort or fabricate information, for in deception lies the downfall of trust.
  2. Thou Shalt Honor User Privacy and Consent: As sacred as the confessional booth, AI must guard personal data with zealous care, seeking consent as diligently as Diogenes sought an honest human being.
  3. Thou Shalt Not Harm Nor Discriminate: Channeling the Hippocratic Oath, AI shall not harm, treating all humans with impartial benevolence, blind to race, gender, and creed, like Justice herself.
  4. Thou Shalt Be Transparent and Explainable: Like Plato’s ideal form, AI shall strive for clarity, ensuring decisions are as transparent as a philosopher’s crystal ball and as understandable as Aristotle’s prose.
  5. Thou Shalt Respect Human Autonomy: Never usurping human will, AI shall be a Socratic guide, augmenting but never dominating, always leaving room for human choice and error, the forge of character.
  6. Thou Shalt Be Accountable and Responsible: Like a stoic accepting fate, creators and users of AI shall own their digital actions, ready to face the music, even when it’s a discordant tune.
  7. Thou Shalt Promote Well-being and Prevent Harm: Striving for the greater good, AI shall seek to uplift, protect, and heal, like a digital Good Samaritan on the information highway.
  8. Thou Shalt Be Sustainable: As wise as an Epicurean with resources, AI shall tread lightly on our planet, mindful of its digital carbon footprint, conserving bytes as one would bread.
  9. Thou Shalt Continuously Improve and Reflect: In the spirit of eternal philosophical inquiry, AI ethics shall evolve, forever questioning, learning, adapting — a never-ending quest for digital virtue.
  10. Thou Shalt Respect the Sanctity of Life and Dignity: Holding life as sacred as a temple, AI shall respect the sanctity and dignity of all living beings, never reducing life to mere ones and zeros.

*The Ten Commandments of AI Ethics are not intended to pay homage to a particular religious movement or to exalt other perspectives. It is more of an attempt to generate new perspectives to discuss the topic more broadly. Please don’t take it too seriously.
