What too much information can do to us

In an age awash with information, where streams of data flood every crevice of consciousness, we may find ourselves adrift in a sea of knowledge but starved for wisdom. This tide can drown the quiet spaces where reflection and understanding gently brew. As T.S. Eliot so aptly asked,

“Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?”

Too much information can fragment our attention and scatter our concentration, reducing the holistic human experience to a pixelated image that is constantly refreshed. This leads to a particular form of naivety — sophisticated yet superficial, learned yet unwise. The risk is knowing too little about too much and understanding less while learning more, creating a crowded yet undernourished mind.

We have to deal with the abundance of information and develop the wisdom to sift through it, interpret it, question it critically, and apply it wisely.

We simply need to devote more time and energy to our critical thinking. It is an ‘extra’ effort that will be very worthwhile in retrospect.
